Sambar Recipe
Ingredients

Red gram(Thuvaraparippu) - 1 cup
Tomatoes - 2 nos
Onions(sliced) - 1/2 cup
Water - 2 cups
Grated coconut - 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt - As reqd
Tamarind(Puli) juice - 1 1/2 tsp
Jaggery(Sharkkara) or sugar - 1 1/2 tsp
Garam masala or any sambar masala powder - 1 tbsp
Coriander leaves

For seasoning:

Oil or ghee - 3 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds(Jeerakam) - 1 tsp
Asafoetida(Kayam) - A pinch
Curry leaves - A few

Method :

​

1)Cook red gram in a pressure cooker and mash well. Keep aside.

2)Grind grated coconut with masala powder and turmeric powder.

3)Cut tomatoes.

4)Take a pot and add mashed dal, water, tomatoes and ground paste and bring it to boil.

5)Add salt, jaggery and tamarind juice and boil for some more time.

6)Add masala powder and onions. Cook till onions become soft.

7)Heat oil in a pan.

8)Add the ingredients for seasoning one by one. When it splutters, add asafoetida and curry leaves.

9)Pour it into the hot sambar.

10)Garnish with cut coriander leaves.
